Learning and Living the Gospel #6 / Developing Talents #3

For this idea we actually combined two activities – Learning and Living the Gospel #6 and Developing Talents #3. We also spent about four or five activity days on this activity and finished up with presenting our production at an activity where we invited families to attend.

Introduction

What is faith?  (read Ether 12:6)
Who do we have faith in?
Why can we have faith in Christ?
What are some stories from the Book of Mormon that you remember that are about having faith in Jesus Christ?

Brainstorming

List stories that the girls can think of.  Talk about which one(s) they would like to use as the basis for a play.
–Depending on the number of “parts” for a given story, divide the girls into groups.
–Another idea is to take the scripture story and re-write it with a modern setting.
Working with the girls, sketch out the play – list the parts, costumes and setting and props.
Have the girls write out the dialogue and stage directions.
If possible, send each girl home with a copy of her part. Otherwise, hand them out before the next activity

Rehearsing the Play

Spend a couple of activities rehearsing the play. Encourage the girls to memorize their parts and practice moving around the “stage” area where you will actually perform the play. (We just presented it in the Primary room – nothing fancy).

Scenery, Props, Costumes

If required, spend an activity preparing scenery for the play.  This can be as simple as planning to hang some sheets up, or making some simple cardboard cut-outs.
(For example:  We did a modern re-telling of Nephi building the boat.  We used chairs from the Primary room, which we lined up as our “waves”.  We draped them with a blue sheet.  We arranged some larger chairs behind them as a “boat” and used cardboard to make a “front” for the chairs that looked like a boat).

Decide what props or costumes you might need or want.  Make assignments for the girls to bring the various items, depending on what is available.

Performance

Plan an activity to perform your play.  Be sure to invite parents and family members.  Don’t forget the camera or video recorder!

The parents loved seeing their girls perform and we had a good time preparing.  None of us leaders really had any experience with drama, so we kept it very simple.

Explain how taking the sacrament helps you renew your baptismal covenant. In a family home evening, teach others about things we can do to remain faithful.
TWO
Give a family home evening lesson on Joseph Smith’s First Vision (see Joseph Smith—History 1:1–20). Discuss how Heavenly Father answers our sincere prayers.
THREE
Mark these verses about the Holy Ghost in your scriptures: John 14:16–17, 2 Nephi 32:5, and Moroni 10:5. Discuss ways the Holy Ghost helps you.
FOUR
Read a recent conference address given by the prophet. Decide what you can do to follow the prophet, and do it.
FIVE
Give an opening and a closing prayer in family home evening or at Primary. Share your feelings about how prayer protects us and helps us to stay close to Heavenly Father and the Savior.
SIX
Tell a story from the Book of Mormon that teaches about faith in Jesus Christ. Share your testimony of the Savior.
SEVEN
Read D&C 89. Discuss how Heavenly Father blesses us when we faithfully live the Word of Wisdom. Help plan and conduct an activity to teach the Word of Wisdom to others.
EIGHT
Prepare a pedigree chart with your name and your parents’ and grandparents’ names. Prepare a family group record for your family and share a family story. Discuss how performing temple work blesses families.
NINE
Learn to sing “Choose the Right”. Explain what agency is and what it means to be responsible for your choices. Discuss how making good choices has helped you develop greater faith.

Introductory Discussion

What is the baptismal covenant, or what promises did you and Heavenly Father make when you were baptized?

We:  Take the name of Jesus Christ, Serve Him, Keep His commandments.

Heavenly Father:  Forgives us when we repent, Gives us the Gift of the Holy Ghost, Lets us live with Him forever.

Read pg. 2 from the Faith in God book.

How does taking the sacrament help us renew, or make again, our baptismal covenant?

What are some things we can do that help us keep our baptismal covenant?

Preparation of the FHE Lessson Activity

Hand out paper & pencils for the girls to make notes.

What are things we can use in a lesson?

- Scriptures – Stories & Examples – Thinking Questions – Pictures & Objects – Music – Activities & Games

Have the girls make notes of which things they want to include in their lesson.

Scriptures could include the references from the Faith in God book, page 2, as well as others on baptism and the sacrament.

Some stories I found on baptism from the Friend:  “Choosing Sides”, “Clean Again!”, “Clean Again”, & “All Clean”.

We talked about the different questions the girls could ask as part of their lesson and had them write them down.

The girls found pictures from old copies of The Friend, The New Era, and The Ensign to use as visual aids (pictures of the sacrament, the Savior, baptism, service, etc.)

We looked in the topical guide in the back of The Children’s Songbook for songs on topics such as baptism, the sacrament, keeping the commandments, etc.

The girls prepared the game “Keeping Our Baptismal Covenant” by cutting out the puzzle pieces (store in a ziplock) and mounting the board on an opened file folder.  Then they used the folder to hold their notes and visual aids.  They also decorated the outside of their folder.

As a final step, we made sure the parents knew that the girls had a lesson prepared and reminded the girls they could call us for help if they weren’t sure of any of the materials they prepared.
