Learning and Living the Gospel #2
Introduction
Ask: What do you know about Joseph Smith’s First Vision? Have the girls take turns sharing facts that they know. As appropriate, make connections to the girls themselves (for example, ask if anyone has a sibling 14 years old, if anyone has ever had a question for Heavenly Father, if they are ever confused by what other people are saying, etc.).
Read: James 1:5 (we read this after one of the girls shared the fact that Joseph Smith had read this scripture)
Activity
Hand out flannel board materials to make figures to tell the story of the First Vision. Some good figures can be found at:
A basic flannel board can be made with a piece of cardboard covered with flannel or felt. Paper pieces can be backed with fusible interfacing (just cut to size and glue on the back of the paper). If you want to be fancier or have the money, the clip art pieces can be printed on t-shirt transfer paper and ironed on to white felt. You can also trace figures directly onto heavy non-fusible interfacing that can then be colored with pencils or markers.
Alternatively, you can suggest the girls use a metal cookie sheet with magnets. No prep is required other than cutting and coloring the pieces.
While the girls are cutting/coloring, talk about a basic lesson format the girls can use. We prepared a handout with suggestions that you can down load here.
Depending on your time, you can have the girls work in pairs and practice telling the story of the First Vision. Alternatively, you can watch either “The First Vision” (the older video) or “The Restoration” (both found on Church History Collection).
Conclusion
Bear testimony of the First Vision and encourage the girls to share the account at their next family home evening. We also let the parents know that their girls have prepared a lesson to share.

Explain how taking the sacrament helps you renew your baptismal covenant. In a family home evening, teach others about things we can do to remain faithful.
TWO
Give a family home evening lesson on Joseph Smith’s First Vision (see Joseph Smith—History 1:1–20). Discuss how Heavenly Father answers our sincere prayers.
THREE
Mark these verses about the Holy Ghost in your scriptures: John 14:16–17, 2 Nephi 32:5, and Moroni 10:5. Discuss ways the Holy Ghost helps you.
FOUR
Read a recent conference address given by the prophet. Decide what you can do to follow the prophet, and do it.
FIVE
Give an opening and a closing prayer in family home evening or at Primary. Share your feelings about how prayer protects us and helps us to stay close to Heavenly Father and the Savior.
SIX
Tell a story from the Book of Mormon that teaches about faith in Jesus Christ. Share your testimony of the Savior.
SEVEN
Read D&C 89. Discuss how Heavenly Father blesses us when we faithfully live the Word of Wisdom. Help plan and conduct an activity to teach the Word of Wisdom to others.
EIGHT
Prepare a pedigree chart with your name and your parents’ and grandparents’ names. Prepare a family group record for your family and share a family story. Discuss how performing temple work blesses families.
